Overview

The Yokohama Museum of Art, Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, and Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design are public museums, each of which represents a specific region of Japan. All three opened during the so-called “museum-construction rush” that occurred around 1980. Over the intervening 40 years, each facility assembled a rich and diverse collection. But at the same time, modern and contemporary Western art is a pillar of the museums’ acquisition policies, and they are also similar in the sense that many of these works function as the “face” of the institution.

This exhibition, a cooperative undertaking between the three museums, reexamines the history of 20th century Western art through a combination of items from their holdings. It features approximately 120 paintings and other selected works from the museums’ esteemed collections of Western art by 20th century masters such as Picasso, Klee, Miró, Ernst, Dalí, Magritte, Pollock, Bacon, Warhol, and Richter. With special displays comparing pieces from the collections by specific artists, the exhibition is interwoven with features that are uniquely suited to a cooperative project of this type while also tracing the trajectory of art from the previous century, which was marked by a series of innovations in expressive technique and concept.

Viewers will enjoy savoring the essence of European and American modern and contemporary art through these three competing collections. They will also have an opportunity to follow in the museums’ footsteps as they vied to expand their acquisitions, and verify the rich assets that they amassed as a result.

1. Enjoy Gems of 20th century Western Art from All Three Museums at Once!

The exhibition is a concentration of approximately 120 works by some 70 artists, stretching from modern masters like Picasso to esteemed figures of postwar contemporary art such as Warhol and Richter. Isn’t it remarkable that these richly diverse and highly accomplished works are contained in the collections of regional museums in Japan?

While providing an overview of major concepts in 20th century Western art, the exhibition vividly conveys the latent power of Japan’s public museums by examining the historical background that led to the accumulation of this artistic inheritance in the country.

2. What’s a Trialogue?

The term “trialogue” means “tripartite talk.” This exhibition, a collaborative project between three public museums representing their respective regions, is a product of lengthy discussions between curators from each facility designed to create an organic link between the collections, and arrive at a lineup that provides an overview of 20th century Western art. With this title in mind, the number “three” was chosen as a keyword, as reflected by the three-part structure of the exhibition and the three-decade span of each part.

3. Viewpoints That Are Unique to the Three-Museum Collaborative Project

Assembling these works from the museums highlights the differences and similarities between the collections. The strengths of each collection are pushed to the fore, complemented by their weaknesses, and the fact that each museum places a different weight on specific temporal and regional factors has enabled us to create a consummate display structure for the exhibition.

The exhibition also focuses on artists that are common to all three collections. A feature titled “Artist in Focus” fosters a deeper understanding of each artist and collection by means of a three-way comparison between the museums’ holdings.
