概要

The collection of the Yokohama Museum of Art includes many artworks that were donated by philanthropists or that formerly belonged to distinctive private collectors. This year, the displays of the museum collection are designed to introduce the activities of these individuals and their contributions to the museum.

In the current display, we focus on seven private collectors.

One such individual was Sakata Takeo (1888-1984), who established SAKATA SEED CORPORATION in Yokohama in 1913, and who, in addition to running what was a thriving seed production and sales business, also funneled much of his passion into his collection of Western modern art. In 1983, 52 of those carefully selected artworks were donated to what was then still the preparations office of the Yokohama Museum of Art. In this exhibition we demonstrate the unique characteristics of collections such as Sakata's - be they focused on oil paintings, nihon-ga (Japanese-style) paintings, craft works, prints, and so on.

Also, in collaboration with the Osaragi Jirō Memorial Museum, we commemorate the 40th anniversary of the death of the novelist and art collector Osaragi Jirō (1897-1973) with a special display of prints by French artist Paul Renouard (1845-1924) that were owned by Osaragi.

Meanwhile, in the Photography Gallery, we exhibit a selection of Pop Art works, including Campbell’s Soup II by Andy Warhol (1928-1987), which was one of the works selected in the museum's 2013 Collection Friends program. Also on display is the video work Untitled, by Peter Coffin (1972-), which was exhibited in the Yokohama Triennale 2011 and acquired by the museum in 2012.
