There are six sculptures by Isamu NOGUCHI in the collection of the Yokohama Museum of Art. Noguchi, who was born to the Japanese poet NOGUCHI Yonejirō and American Léonie GILMOUR, grew up in Chigasaki and attended a Catholic primary school in Yokohama.

The role of sculpture in society is something that always intrigued Noguchi. A work of sculpture is never really independent from the environment in which it is placed. Instead, it has the ability to become one with that environment and thus stimulate the imagination of the people who experience it. By placing a work of sculpture in an urban environment, Noguchi said, you can create a piazza where people gather and talk.
